Camp is a brand that makes great Mac’ n’ Cheese. They produce their food together with organic farmers so they can turn happy plants into happy pasta. They run their online store on Shopify Plus and have three variants of their popular Mac’ n’ Cheese.
As a Shopify Plus brand you bet their storefront is as delicious as their product - check it out here.
So what Camp did was an as easy as smart marketing push where they put in a top bar on their Shopify store stating “Holiday Gift: Free Mac’ n’ Cheese”. Clicking that obvious hook took customers to a page where they could pick any of their three variants and receive a free 3-pack - only paying for the shipping. Clicking that link would take the customer straight to Shopify’s checkout with a Checkout Link and voila!
During a three week window in December Camp gave away almost 3000 3-packs of Mac’ n’ Cheese to customers which amounts to more than 3000 pounds (1500kg). All done with the simple tactic of giving away free samples and Checkout Links.
It took Camp 3 days from installing Checkout Links until their campaign was live - it’s that quick to do!
There are multiple benefits to giving away free products like Camp did here. You’ll attract new customers, increase brand awareness and loyalty among existing customers and maybe most importantly gather valuable first hand customer data very cost effective way.
We’ll go through all benefits to giving away free samples on your Shopify store in this blog post.
Giving away free samples in the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry is a pretty common practice. Essentially, it's when a company offers a small sample of their product for customers to try before they buy. It's like a test drive for a car or a sample platter at a restaurant. It's a great way for customers to get a taste of the product and decide if they like it before committing to a full purchase - or in Camps case a subscription.
Nowadays, with the rise of e-commerce, the concept of giving away free samples has become more relevant than ever. Many CPG companies are now offering free samples on their Shopify stores to attract new customers and give them the opportunity to try their products before making a purchase.
It's a win-win situation for both the customers and merchants, as it allows them to make more informed purchase decisions, and for the merchants to gather valuable customer data and insights to improve their marketing strategies.
It's kind of like a "try before you buy" type of deal. People are more likely to take a chance on a product if they can test it out first. For example, if you're selling a new type of shampoo and someone has never tried it before, they might be hesitant to spend money on a full bottle without knowing if it will work for them. But if you offer them a free sample, they can try it out and decide if they like it before making a purchase. This can be especially effective for subscription based CPG’s and high cost items, as these products might be considered a bigger investment and people want to be sure they are getting what they are paying for.
When people receive a free sample, they are more likely to talk about it with their friends and family. Word-of-mouth is a powerful form of marketing, and if people like the product they received, they will likely tell others about it.
Just imagine you visit Camp’s website and see that you can get some free delicious food delivered to your doorstep - don’t you immediately, after ordering yourself, send it to a couple of friends?
This one is fairly straight forward right? Every person who orders a free sample from your Shopify is a person with an intent to purchase and use your product. They also just gave you all of their contact information. That’s huge for your marketing efforts going forward. As mentioned before Camp collected almost 3000 customers during their campaign.
This one connects with the previous points. Since you now have put your product in the hand of a person who you also know how to connect with there’s a time for your review app of choice to take over from Checkout Links. We’re quite fond of Junip but also integrates with Judge.me, Yotpo, Fera, Shopify’s Product Reviews and Stamped but any review app will do the job!
Well, that’s it. That’s how Shopify Plus brand Camp gave away 3000 pounds of Mac’ n’ Cheese over the holidays with Checkout Links.
